Lobstermen to report catch

Posted by Elliott Teel on January 23, 2008

About 850 lobstermen, representing 10 percent of those licensed in Maine, will have to turn in logbook reports of how many times they went out on the water, how many traps they set or hauled each time, and how many lobsters they caught.

The purpose of the reports is to give Department of Marine Resources officials and scientists a better idea of how many traps are being used and how long they are in the water. more

Penobscot River restoration

Posted by Elliott Teel on January 4, 2008

The Penobscot River Restoration Trust is buying three dams on the Penobscot to restore Atlantic salmon, endangered shortnose sturgeon, American shad among other fish.

The plan ultimately calls for removing two of the dams and creating a fish bypass at the third. That work would cost an additional $25 million, which has not yet been raised.

The completion of the initial fundraising efforts means organizers can focus now on plans for removing or modifying the dams once they complete the purchase this year.

President Bush effectively put the initial fundraising effort over the top last week when he signed a $555 billion spending bill that includes $10 million for the Penobscot restoration effort.

Group fights for eel protection

Posted by Elliott Teel on December 31, 2007

The Friends of Merrymeeting Bay are asking the state’s highest court to overturn a lower court’s decision to not intervene in a ruling by Maine Board of Environmental Protection (BEP).

At issue is downstream passage for the American Eel. The BEP found that there was not enough evidence to show that the eel population is at risk.  The lower court ruled that it did not authority to review the BEP decision.
